Anxiety in Adults: How to Identify the Symptoms and Deal With It

Anxiety is a very common mind and body reaction to an unfamiliar or stressful situation that precedes an event. On certain levels, anxiety can be a good thing to keep us to stay aware and cautious of a situation. However, it becomes a real problem when a person starts to lose control of their mind and body and constantly feels anxious, no matter how trivial an event could be.

In fact, mood and anxiety disorders are among the most common types of mental disorders in Canada and have been shown to significantly impact the daily lives of those affected. A study conducted by the Canada Public Health has shown that in 2013, an estimated 3 million Canadians (11.6%) aged 18 years or older reported that they had a mood and/or anxiety disorder. After Covid 19, another study published by the Public Health Agency of Canada has shown that 13% of Canadians have been suffering from anxiety, with higher levels in women (16%) compared to men (10%).

Anxiety does not only affect individuals but also everyone that is around, including families, the workplace environment, and the community.

How to identify common symptoms of anxiety disorder

Anxiety symptoms can be mild such as sweaty palms, a flushed face, mood swings, or a mildly increase in the heart rate. When more intense, the symptoms can quickly escalate to more severe and intense feelings, affecting the mind and body, leaving the person with an emotional sensation that can lead to life-threatening risks.

Some of the most common anxiety symptoms may include:

  • Feeling nervous, restless, or tense.
  • Having a sense of impending danger or panic.
  • Having an increased heart rate (heart pounding).
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation).
  • Shaking or trembling.
  • Dizziness.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Numbness or tingling.
  • Intense heat or chills.
  • Chest pain.
  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry.
  • Have difficulty falling asleep.

When more than one symptom is presented in the person’s life, it is time to seek help and find solutions that can help to minimize the symptoms.
